Studio Space

The HVG Art Studio is located in the T building basement and consists of three spaces, one for working, one for storage, and a semi-private studio space. The HVG Art Studio measures approximately 20’ x 20’ and has two large 5’ x 5’ windows facing the river. There is a work sink in the room, but, please note, no bathroom.

The studio space is equipped with a table, a drafting table, easels, and a collection of stools. Art storage, lockers and flat file cabinets are located in an adjacent basement room. The flat files and storage racks are for work in progress and not for permanent storage. See Art Storage Room Rules for more details.

The furnishings have been loaned or donated by Committee members. Please treat them with care. If members have furnishings to donate or loan to the HVG Art Studio, please email the HVG Art Studio Committee at hvgartstudio@gmail.com.

Please note: Membership is limited to residents of Hudson View Gardens.

Permitted Activities

The HVG Art Studio is available to residents to pursue their artistic work as long as it is compatible with the space and other member’s work, such work includes drawing, painting, etching, drypoint, sculpture (clay, wax, wood), pottery, digital photography, woodblock, crafts, creative writing, etc.

Any art activity involving power equipment or potentially hazardous material or equipment must be pre-approved by Committee. Because residents live above the Art Studio, no activity which can be heard beyond the Art Studio walls will be permitted. In addition, most HVG basement spaces house various utilities, such as electrical boxes, gas lines, piping, and the Art Studio is no exception.

No activities involving high heat or potentially combustible materials/equipment, such as kilns, high intensity electrical equipment that might spark, or dark rooms requiring toxic chemicals, is permitted. Nothing may be left stored in yellow demarcated clearance spaces in front of utilities.

Management

The HVG Art Studio is currently managed by the HVG Art Studio Committee. Membership registration, open houses, oversight and fee collection will be by the HVG Art Studio Committee monitors, Aileen Hengeveld, R-10, hvgartstudio@gmail.com, and George Gilliland, E-64, ggillilandnyc@gmail.com.

The annual membership fee is payable by check to “Hudson View Gardens” with a notation in memo line that check is for “HVG Art Studio Membership.” A membership registration form is attached below and available here. Membership fees for residents joining after January  will be adjusted pro-rata. Please contact George or Aileen for details.

Daily Timeslots

Each day has been divided into Timeslots so that all members will have an opportunity to use and enjoy the space equitably.

Building maintenance requires, on Mondays, Wednesday and Fridays, that the HVG Art Studio be closed between 11-12 am and 3:30-4 pm for the removal of garbage from the walk up buildings out the Art Studio casement door exit to Cabrini Boulevard.   Subject to these closures, the HVG Art Studio may be used and reserved by members in 2-hour timeslots starting at 8am each day.

Reservations

Members must reserve their spots on the online calendar as follows: https://koalendar.com/e/hvg-art-studio

Cancellations: If a member does not plan to use a reservation, members are requested to cancel 24 hours in advance so that other members may use the Timeslot.  When you receive the confirmation email after booking a Timeslot, there is a link to cancel.

Timeslots used in excess of the member’s monthly level allowance will be charged to members at $5 per timeslot. HVG or the Committee may bill members for Timeslots used in excess of a member’s level on a monthly, annual or other basis convenient to management.

Storage

Individual storage lockers ($75 a year) and bin storage ($100/year) are available on a first come, first serve basis. Flat file cabinets and storage racks are available without charge for temporary use only for unfinished work. When work is done it must be removed to allow other members use of temporary files and racks. A locked storage locker will be provided for flammable materials such as odorless turpentine, etc.
